Maintaining Your Focus
Why is it hard to stay focused? This question may not be for a few of us but for the majority on why is it hard to maintain a consistent focus on our goal? To put it frankly, why can we stay on target on something that may not be as productive for our growth? I pondered on this subject for quite some time and came to a solution that may help us all.
I have been what most of you may call a scatter brain for all of my life. Any new idea that comes to mind that I am intrigued by, I will pursue it. Basically like the thrill of hunt or accomplishing the goal was the only mission. Then when completed, the fire quickly burns out because it was never truly a real passion. I would go back to completing the one goal that I want to accomplish but don’t allow myself to finish.
To be honest, I have done it several times while writing this post and I am not ashamed to admit it. With access to the whole internet at our fingertips, a new tab away, and constant thoughts processing in our minds, it is an extremely difficult task to stay on course until completion. I am amazed I can ever get anything done.
But that nagging feeling in the back of mind always takes over momentarily. The thought of how the sun is dwindling down and you’ve only typed two paragraphs. The cringing feeling of hearing your kids coming down the hallway and you’ve realized that you have thrown away valuable time getting lost on YouTube. Or even how notifications from your social media alerts always seem like an interesting search when you are on your task.
Well my solution, break the goal down and focus on completing the small tasks. Simple, right? I have come to the realization that if I break my goal down into small manageable tasks, ultimately, I can accomplish my goal when I want to. See when we think of a new idea or goal that we would like to accomplish, we for the most part think of the ending result. This can deter most people and ignite others, but that is where the planning begins.
If we simply think from the result to the beginning, we can create steps that can get us to completion or our destination. Now that we have a plan, it is time to map out the steps in ways that we know that can be completed in one sitting. This part will be determined by your own individual focus standards. If you tend to stray a bit more than you’d like, then make the steps smaller for yourself. If you have a little more focus, increase the size and load of the task.
One book that I can recommend that help to attribute my new focused thinking would be The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results. A must read for anyone that would like to get a better understanding of how to focus on your goal and avoid distractions.
This may not be the solution for everyone but it works for me. Utilize it or structure it into your own, either way, it is yours to share. With that being said, I do hope you appreciate our site, learn a great deal, and focus on building yourself for the person that you are to become. Thank you in advance and for your time!
